well considering the age and number of records owned/listened by the average NME staff writer, that's not too bad. although sometimes i think folks like him talk abut the brass cuz they can't tell a guitar from a bass.
that Q dude was probably too busy uploading on myspace his newest pictures of himself spilling some overpriced cocktail over his white belt while he was dancing to the killers in some "indie" club, hugging rich daddy fashon design student girls and all that. those who read Q probably don't buy records anyway.
let's see what mojo and pitchfork have to say.

Mojo love it. Boxed half page review - 4 out of 5 stars. Manish Agarwal takes the honours. Manish - lovely fella and a big supporter of the band. He interviewed them for Time Out a few years ago. Anyway! He says to summarize: 'Mudhoney have always been a cult affair, reflecting their refusal to take things too seriously. With its indelible songs and bug-eyed intensity, this albums makes you wish that more bands could be so irreverent.' Not seen what Pitchfork have to say yet . The new Uncut is out tomorrow. About time they did a piece on the band I think! Time Out will review. Can folks keep their eyes out for any UK Broadsheet reviews over the weekend (Independent/Times/Telegraph etc). I only get the Observer. Can folks not in the UK, and you know who you are, also keep an eye out for reviews? cheers!
The Q bloke is in fact the Editor, Paul Rees. Ex-editor of Kerrang too! So he should know better. Probably a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan. Prize bell end in my opinion. Q magazine IS a joke. Music magazine for people who don't like music.

The observor review was frankly abysmal. It was in the "Here we go again" section that basically says "more guitar-catuerwauling from Mud honey (Under a billion suns- on Sub Pop naturally).
I read that paper and have alto of respect for them as a paper but that pissed me right off.

Uncut aren't that fussed either really. 3 out of 5 says Nick Hasted. He seems to think: 'Mudhoney these days, for all their pioneer status, mostly sound like a regular, decent rock band'. Ok thats not a slagging but hardly a ringing endorsement! Oh well. 'Elsewhere the mood is one of poetic regret'... This is like a 50 word review....how can you sum up an album in 50 words?! Uncuts album reviews are always the weakest part of what is generally not a bad read. This month cover starts are for once not the Beatles, Stones, Dylan, Pink Floyd but the Flaming Lips. Contemporary!! Fuck em all. I don't actually need a review to tell me what I already know about this album!!!!

one gets the feeling that A LOT of people, even serious music fans (journos or not) still take mudhoney for granted and consider them some kinda joke. they've been treating the band like that since MBTC. it's like if at some point it was not cool anymore to like the band, and that it should be treated as a band for kids. i'm sure loads of people out there just don't care about buying mudhoney records anymore--hell, not even listening to them.
sometimes all this makes me laugh, every now and then it pisses me off. but then there's times, you know, when i sit in my room and i listen to UABS, and i look at my piles of records and, you know, i may not be thurston moore but i've heard quite a lot of music good and bad, of all genres, and fuck it, this is a great record!! and i like to think that i'm old enough that i'd be able to cope with the fact that one of my fave bands had put out a lame album... so i'm left with this horrible feeling that there's something wrong somewhere, and i can't really pinpoint where.
the only thing that never fails to put a smile on my face is the thought that, for all the indifference, the band is still loved if not revered buy their peers--musicians. i have rarely meet a band that doesn't at least express some admiration for their music and/or their spirit. oh well.
keep the reviews coming guys...

I've never met any musicians who have done that. Maybe it's different around your end but here? pfft, all yo get is a "Oh I know Touch me i'm sick, anyways back to my band"

Personally speaking people I know kinda think I'm some sort of English eccentric for liking Mudhoney the way I do... I mean folks I know/work with/am married too/am in bands with etc like the band and.... respect them (?!) ok appreciate them!! I think you either REALLY get Mudhoney or ya don't..... it's the subtle nuances.... it's Marks vocals, it's Dannys drumming, it's Stevies guitar, it's Matt AND Guys bass. Put 'em together and..... heh heh heh magic happens. I like Monkeywrench a lot, Steves solo stuff is good, Dan can drum for anyone, Bloodloss are ok, Green River had their moments etc etc. BUT!!!! Nothing it as good as the 4 of them together! No Sir-ee-Bob!! On a journo level.... I'm with Nick Cave on this. 99% of journos are SCUM. Ok sorry... 90%. Journos like Paul Rees (editor of Q) or Conor Mcnichols editor of the NME are CAREER journos. They work for BIG publishers like Emap or IPC. These companies are run PURELY to turn a profit. Fair enough thats their MO. You know what you are getting when you buy these rags. They charge a lot of money for ad space so basically the bigger indies and the majors can afford to advertise their bands in these mags (and without sounding like Thorn here !!!! HA!) it is Payola - to a certain extent.... It's gotten worse over the years too. NME used to (for all it's faults - it never was as good as Melody Maker and Sounds in the 80s!) have a broader remit - now its totally tied into the rock/indie music MACHINE that feeds the kiddies insatiable appetite for fresh new 'product'. What started out as an antidote to major label chart fodder (in the 80s), I'm talking broadly speaking here 'alternative' music, is now a HUGE industry. No surprise there I know, and I'm not complaining, I WORK in the 'independent music business sector'!! Take the NMEs championing of lets face it UTTER shit like the Vines or even less successfully Andrew Wk (remember that WASTE OF SPACE!!) There was NO buzz about these acts before someone at a boardroom level decided they must prevail. Jesus I DO sound like a looney here! Ok I'm exaggerating a bit Sorry everyone!! Ok ok. When it comes to Mudhoney UK writers wise at the moment it's Manish Argawal and still Keith Cameron (long time supporter) who get 'em. I doubt the editor of the NME has ever heard them! Everret True when he can be arsed can still pen an erudite appraisal of the band. Yoodooright - you are right! My point when I started this missive was most journos DON'T get the band. I don't think most writers who put pinky to keyboard to write about say.... Sonic Youth really get that band either! Funny tunings! They're old! Godfathers of noise blah blah blah. Take Fugazi!!! More people wrote about their politics and 'lifestyle or 'business' choices than the fact that when it came to the music they were BOUNDARY pushers!!!! That shit REALLY annoys me!!! As lyrically the band seem to have been stating over the last couple of albums, well my interpratation anyway, is that as musicians and within the business THEY are outsiders. They're 'translucent' they're 'outside'. FUCK! They are too! Like Mark sings in 'On The Move' they are so far outside....they're coming back around again!! JESUS what am I talking about here!!! Generally I'm still as annoyed as I was when I was 17/18 that the bands I like don't get the recognition they deserve. Be it Loop, Live Skull, Big Black, Mudhoney etc then (and still now) and Comets On Fire, Circle, Nebula, New Pornograhers etc etc now! Or at least taken as SERIOUSLY as some fucking derd niffer like Jamie Cullum!! ha ha! Sorry I've had half a bottle of champagne tonight.... My wife just passed her MA (with a 1st and distinction!) so I've been celebrating!! I'll deny I even wrote this in the morning!! By the way I agree with Thurston_Whore, I love this forum too!
