I only saw the Butthole once - 1989 at the Reading Festival. This is post Locust Abortion Technician and Hairway to Steven. Kinda pre them sucking. Everyone was so excited that they were playing. The tails of their live shows had gone around. An ex-girlfriend of mine had been at the Town & Country show the year before in London and had had her mind blown. This is when they would play the films of penis re-construction etc etc. Grown men fainting in the crowd at that one.... I can remember the 'pit' at Reading being insane for them. Here I sound like sad old dad - but this was pre-crowd surfing. Just good natured circles etc. Buttholes crowd wasn't really a meat head deal. At Reading they started with Sweet Loaf - then smashed all their (cheap pawn shop) instruments. Gibby going mental with the voice box. There was a cloud of dust over the pit - like a sandstorm. It was rough. I saw one dude (with bleached white dreads down to his ass - this is 1989 remember - so quite a sight!) enter the pit wearing a construction helmet. I still have the inner bit at home..... They released (in my opinion) their last good record after Reading - a wee 10" affair with Helicopter on it. Loads of photos from Reading on the back cover I think. There was a great TV feature on them on Snub back in the day too. Wonder if that's on You Tube. It is!!! www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2h6TU1kFDQ&search=butthole%20surfersThey were so out there......check it out!

Great smallstone thanks for sharing that little story with us i would have fucking loved to see them in those days but i have a really weak stomach so i think watching some of those films i would have passed out also lol. Also i have that bootleg from reading somewhere its only audio but if you want a copy of it i can get it over to you.In terms of them being shit or whatever now i still love all their music and everything they released was great even though the at the latter stages they mabye went to much to the poppy side but hey just look back at the albums they released gotta love em. Oh yeah i also got some fucking crazy buttholes videos/interviews/early performances which are fucking nuts you think ozzy osbourne took drugs haha the buttholes must have done every drugs known to man more than once to not that/thats anything to laugh about but they survived and they are just amazing.

Beacuse they were pretty much a pop band then as-a-pose to what they had been making previously. ? ?

yea they were but.. i would still buy there records just to have for fun.. i mean its the butthole surfers comeon its like basically a local band for me. as they basically came out of dallas when the whole dallas music scene was big.. which was also around the time when the seattle music scene was big too. but the butthole surfers really came outa austin or somthing idk but they used to play free shows in dallas and shit so yea i call them a dallas band

Sure i mean i like all their albums but again lots of the stuff they did say in the 90s wasnt anything new we hadnt heard from another 90s alternitive band,I'd prefer the earlier stuff and yeah they were from austin, texas.
