Hi everyone, I just read this book by Michael Azzerad (he's the author of Nirvana's Come as you are -great book in my opinion-), anyway, the books is very good, although I think some of the chapters are too small, but in Mudhoney's chapter he gives some pretty good descriptions on the early days, even from Green River, altough in my opinion he gives too much to sub pop's history, does anyone else have read this? what do you think of it?

Is it a GREAT book. I have a very nice hardback 1st edition copy, it's since come out in paperback (if I ever see 2nd hand copies I buy them for friends). I agree the Mudhoney chapter is a little 'dry' and lingers a bit too much on the whole Sub Pop hype machine story, but it's still pretty good. The chapters on Fugazi, Minor Threat, Replacements, Sonic Youth and Black Flag are very interesting. The Big Black chapter is very very good but for me best and funniest chapter of all and perhaps the best written is the one on the Butthole Surfers. It's laugh out loud hilarious!!! They were MENTAL!! Truly one of a kind as a band. Azzerard can be a little serious and academic but this is still one the BEST books on music I have ever read. cheers

Great book indeed!
The chapters about Black Flag, the Buttholes Surfers & both Ian's bands are my favorites I guess. Black Flag cause SST is somehow responsible for this whole indie thing. The Butthole Surfers were just crazy, fucking mentals indeed. As a Dutchie I enjoyed the part about that show In Eindhoven they did. And as for Ian MacKaye, I just repect his entire range of ideas about punk rock and maybe life in general. That show Fugazi played while the audience was banned outside so Fugazi had to play loud as fuck must've been awesome.
The chapter about Dinosaur was kinda dissapointing. I like them as a band, but the story about them was pretty boring. And J is pretty much being described as an asshole, guess Michael's right in some way.
Any other recommendations?
(P.S. Hi, I'm new here. My name is Maarten and I like beer, hash, David Lynch movies and I adore the Melvins)
