It wouldn't be the same without Layne. It's like Nirvana reforming with somebody else playing guitar and singing, like the new Queen thing. Most reunions (not all) are nowhere near as good, look at the Thin Lizzy comeback. The Pixies one was good, mainly because it had all the original members. If Pixies came back and there was no Kim for instance, it would be crap.

Alice In Chains returns with surprise free show
There have been scores of imitators in the decade that has passed since Alice in Chains quit touring. But none of those pale facsimiles need play another note. Ever. Again. Not after the real deal made its official return to touring Tuesday night at Seattle’s Moore Theatre. There the surviving band members – guitarist Jerry Cantrell, drummer Sean Kinney and bassist Mike Inez – headlined a free, surprise warm-up concert with new singer William DuVall filling in for the late Layne Staley and a little help from Seattle rock royalty. Fans lined up at the Moore Monday with just a half hour’s notice, snatching up every last free ticket. And their timeliness and persistence was well rewarded as Chains let loose with a sledgehammer of a set that kicked off with “Sludge Factory” and included several fan favorites that had been understandably absent early last year when Cantrell, Kinney and Inez headlined their first concert since 1996, a tsunami benefit held at The Premier nightclub in Seattle.
Sure, a hint of guilt underscored the pleasure of hearing songs like “Junkhead,” “We Die Young” and “Dirt,” especially considering the downward spiral of drug addiction that claimed Staley’s life in 2002. But that was far outweighed by many of the songs’ primal power – especially “We Die Young,” which began a four-song encore.
And that is not to mention the sight of the Chains guys obviously having so much fun. A big grin frequently broke through Cantrell’s menacing guitar solo scowl. The Spanaway native reached out several times between songs to high five a few luck fans down front.
“It was important for us to come back home and start again,” he said early on.
And for his part, DuVall -- also front man for Comes With The Fall and a backing member of Cantrell’s solo band – did a phenomenal job filling in for one of the great singers in hard rock history.
Not only did DuVall sound a bit like Staley, but – his ethnicity aside – he even resembled the late singer in superficial ways, from his skinny build and pork chop sideburns to certain poses he would strike as he belted out vocals. He’d won this reviewer over by the time he nailed that melodramatic, wailing finale to “Love/Hate/Love” a few songs into the show.
While DuVall added stability this time around, there were still remnants of the round robin approach the band used at the tsunami benefit. Queensryche’s Chris DeGarmo joined in for “Junkhead” and stuck around on to add a second guitar for a few tunes. Velvet Revolver axe man Duff McKagan, a Seattle native, came out for a big sing-along delivery of “Rooster,” also sticking around for the last pre-encore numbers, “Would” and “Man in the Box.”
Of course Heart’s Ann Wilson was there, just a couple of months after Chains performed during a “Decades Live” tribute concert for Heart that aired recently on VH-1 classic. Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil even showed up, still grizzly bearded and swigging a 40-ounce beer as he trotted out for the band’s final bow.
“Hey, this is … practice, man,” Cantrell joked after a false start on “Would.” But it was hard to imagine many concerts this year topping what Chains delivered on Tuesday night.
Sirens Sister, a band featuring members of Seattle’s Vendetta Red, opened with a pop set that didn’t seem to quite fit Alice in Chains’ dark, metal vibe.
Fans seemed well pleased as they filtered out of the venue.
A grinning Neil Aguinaldo, 27, of Seattle clutched one of several drum sticks that Kinney had tossed into the crowd. “I can barely talk I was screaming so hard,” he said. “It’s probably one of the best shows I’ve ever been to.” “They just sounded like they’d never left,” declared Ken Kennedy, 34, of Lake Forest Park.
Regarding DuVall’s performance: “I’m not gonna say he’s Layne Staley, but he sounded damn good.” “It’s been far too long since I’ve seen this band,” said Jason Jones, 36, of Seattle. “I thought the lead singer was great.” But one fan’s opinion carried a bit more weight than all the rest. Phil Staley – the late Layne Staley’s dad – appeared to be in an especially jovial mood as he posed for photographs on the Virginia Street side of the Moore.
“It felt good, man,” said the elder Staley, who had been joined earlier by Layne Staley’s stepfather, Jim Elmer, in introducing the band. “It was like old times. Obviously, without Layne it isn’t the same. But Jerry, Sean and Mike are like my boys. I loved seein’ them together. I couldn’t be more enthused.”
His prediction for 2006?: “Alice in Chains will rock the music world again.”
