In the shops now (in UK anyways). New Uncut. Kurt Cobain on the cover. 11-13 page feature on 'grunge'. Nirvana-centric, but bits about Mudhoney (+ Lanegan/PJ, Hole etc). Written by Andrew Mueller. It's ok.....just kind scratchs surface really. Some funny quotes from Mark. Worth tracking down. At the end says something about Mark choosing his top 10 grunge tracks on the Uncut website www.uncut.co.uk/but as yet its not up there - or at least I can't find it! But that WOULD be interesting. Anyways - check it out cheers

Smells like another attempt to rip off some pennies of confused teenagers by something that never existed.

Ok ok ok. Maybe we should do our own 'grunge' top ten... maybe not Thing is - ya gots ya NME running a 'were you born when Nevermind came out' schtick at the moment. Basically a lot of folks 'get into' Nirvana as teenagers (I did! - it was just 17 years ago . That album came out 15 years ago this month hence this whole Uncut Grunge thing. Magazines put Cobain on the cover as he's an icon - they wouldn't put any of the other grunge folks on as they wouldn't sell as many copies of their mag - simple as that. Remember before Nevermind came out Mudhoney WERE the 'bigger' band. They were on the cover of NME/Melody Maker and Sounds quite often. They were a real BIG band... Grunge was and is a handy catch all term that - yeah - didn't really mean much then and certainly doesn't mean much now (musically anyway)! It's like Gen X or Emo or Punk or Goth. I mean where Stone Temple Pilots grunge? They always get included in these sorta 'round ups'. Where Alice In Chains??!! Did ones band have to be from Seattle to be 'grunge'? For about 5 mins Afghan Whigs (also included in this Uncut thingy) were 'grunge'... I mean I LOVE the Whigs... The Mudhoney lads kinda found the whole thing (grunge explosion) a bit odd back in the day - there were taking the piss out of it pretty quickly. I doubt they expected to be answering questions about it 15-20 years on. But the fact it made such a big cultural impact and cos Kurt committed suicide keeps it an interesting story. Oh and (some of) the musics great too! What annoyed me about Andrew Muellers piece is his attitude a bit. His whole 'oh my god we all wore flannel and had fringes - how embarrassing' - stance. I'm not embarassed about it! I've still got long hair and I have a few check/flannel shirts in my wardrobe ;D So sue me! Actually I am gonna do my grunge top 10!
