Well, many of us are musicians obviously. So who inspires you to play your instrument? who do you aspire to play like? who are your main influences?
personally, my favorite guitar players are Greg Sage, Bob Mould, and Steve Turner.

Drums - John Bonham, Mitch Mitchell, Brendan Canty (Fugazi), Todd Trainer (Shellac), Dan Peters, Dale Crover, Dave Grohl, Murph, Grant Hart, Clem Burke, Guitar - Steve Turner, J Mascis (drums too), Nels Cline, Thurston Moore, Neil Young, Ian Mackaye, Mick Harvey, Doug Martsch (Built To Spill), Billy Childish, Fred Neil, Robbie Robertson, Lee Ranaldo, Lou Barlow, Hendrix, Stirling Morrison (VU), Tom Verlaine (Television), Ron Asheton, Michael Rother (Neu), Michael Karoli (Can), David Rawlings (Gillian Welch dude), Kevin Shields. It's just guitars and drums in my house. I can't really play guitar despite my wish to get better and my collection of gear! I just suck basically! Drums I'm alright on and can bumble through I'd love to nail that Mascis sound on guitar. He just ATTACKS the damn thing. Drums as well. I'd say he's my favourite musician. Listening to say Get Me or Start Choppin or even Where'd You Go. The way it all gels, the way he tears at the strings.... wow. But then again Nels Cline live with Wilco. Insane. He's like Thurston or J but with like more sort of trad. chops. but at the same time he's so fluid and free as well!! But then for just riffs ya got Ron Asheton. It's so pure. Refined killer riffs. No flab at all!!! He just kills all the chickens in the truck every time!! Even now! But like David Rawlings.... his acoustic guitar playing is just insane! He's like a bluegrass/country J Mascis. Melodic and just so.... emotive!!! I know one should dig the 'greats' (your Claptons, Becks etc etc) but they just don't move me like these dudes do. Sorry to let rip!!

Mascis wise: he did most of the drums on the Dinosaur Jr 'Where You Been' album (amongst others) and tends to do most of the drums on Fog stuff. I think he starts recording songs by just going in - bashing down the drum patterns and then builds the songs up from there. Pretty clever.....! Check out the new Witch album where he is the drummer. Awesome stuff. He was a drummer first and foremost before he turned into guitar dude He drummed for Upside Down Cross too (80s/90s death/speed/grind satanic metal band). He nearly joined Nirvana after Channing was sacked (though I reckon that was a bit journalistic lienense:). All round musical dude!! Check out the video on YouTube.com for er.... some Fog track. You can see him drumming on there.

Thanks, I still have to check out his Fog stuff and Upside Down Cross. Of course I alreday know Witch, I got that album as soon as it was available on SLSK and will buy it when I next order from aQ. I too have read Cobain once asked Mascis to join Nirvana, which is kind of different than almost joining a band Did you forget Deep Wound on purpose?

Yes I didn't mention Deep Wound as I've still never heard them. I need to take a really long look at myself.... Yeah the Cobain/Mascis interface.... wonder what the story is. Mascis never gets asked about it but it was a story that made the pages of the music press (in the UK anyway) so it must bee true right........

Anybody think how weird it would've been if Mascis did join Nirvana? What would have Smells Like Teen Spirit sounded like?!
