i love the red aunts!
i don't think they are a "riot grrrl" band... i mean not every all-girl band from the '90 were into that thing. the equation : girl playing punk rock = riot grrrl has to go.
you should be careful when you pick up red aunts records, they put out five of them and they're all great but the first two ("drag" and "bad motherfucker...") may be kinda hard to "get" if you're not familiar with their sound. go for their next two releases ("#1 chicken" and "salt box"), those are really two killer albums if you like short garage punk rock noise with attitude. their fifth and last one is called "ghetto blaster", they recorded it with mick collins (gories, blacktops, dirtbombs, etc) and it really shows. it's a damn good record but somehow misses part of the impact of the others so you should get there later.
by the way, red aunts' terri wahl was in a band with collins called the screws, who put out at least two records on in the red records. i saw them live and they were fantastic.

loads, Dogshit Sandwich, H8 Target, POA, Jif Not Cif all good. If fact Jif Not Cif are a bit too NOFX but still good... It's quite a Seattle scene! My band is on the verge of joining the punk rock Birmingham scene, we are playing with POA in June but apparently H8 Target have split up...  They were cool too. |
