Damaged is great but I'm more fan of pre-Rollins era Black Flag.

Yeah I agree with Cherub on this - pre-Rollins is better. The first 4 Years CD or whatever is the best BF album (I think Rollins would agree too!), but Damaged is great tas well. He was after all singing songs that were written before he was in band. I don't know about his spoken word stuff either. It's pretty lightweight obvious humour/observations imo. Don't get me wrong I LIKE Rollins. Just not a huge fan of his music:)I think some of his books are great, Body Bag and Get In The Van etc. You can't knock what BF achieved and how IMPORTANT a band they were paving a way with underground shows, having their own label, touring etc etc. I wish I had seen them play! Hats off to SST too! What a great label they were in the 1980s!! Actually what am I saying here...... OK - I'm gonna go home tonight and give My War and Family Man a listen......see if I'm wrong:)

i agree with smallstone--"the first four years" and "damaged" are two incredible records and a must for everyone.
while their post-damaged stuff didn't really keep up those high standards to say the least (but most of them got their moments, especially the underrated "my war"), i have always admired how they costantly tried to avoid ending bottled up in one genre and kept pushing the boundaries, actually going back to stuff like black sabbath and grand funk railroad which were not very hip names among the younger punks of those days. sadly, that's one lessons that many of the zillions of hardcore bands out there never bothered to learn.
i've also been a huge fan of kyra since forever, both as a musician and as a girl. too bad she rarely gets mentioned, even by the most hardcore riot grrrls. she'd be quite an example.
