Ok ok you've twisted my arm:) Ok the 1st time I saw Tad was on a double bill with Nirvana at Portsmouth Poly. Now I think I've told that story once. The 2nd and best time was the famous Sub Pop Lamefest at the Astoria when they played with Nirvana and Mudhoney. What a night THAT was! It was Christmas 1989. Again it's a night I'll never forget. So this time we had brought tickets in advance and you know, we'd seen all 3 bands a few times already so this was a chance for once big end of the year Xmas Sub Pop Grunge blow out! It was going to be amazing. The plan was simple. Drive to Gatwick airport from the coast, dump the car, get a train up to Victoria, catch all 3 bands and then train back, home easy! By day of the gig (a Sunday I think) I had TERRIBLE flu. I could barley walk let alone attend a gig in London 50 miles away! But there was no way I was missing this show. So Nirvana. 1st one. A lot of folks'll say they saw Nirvana at the Astoria that night but it's a lie. They were 1st on at about 7.45pm? The place was barely a third full! I remember Kurdt busting a string on the first number and Krist playing the bass line to 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' whilst singing the guitar part (including wah wah solo!). They were messy, BUT GREAT! The set culminated in guitars being busted into matchwood. There are some great photos of the night with Krist wielding his Ibanez bass like a bat and smashing Kurdts wee guitar to pieces. They were good. But all I could do was watch slumped in a corner, sniffing, sneezing and feeling terrible! Tad was monumental though! Kurt Danielson, the bassist, loudly claimed on taking the stage 'Hey everyone, I met the Queen today, and COLD COCKED HER!'. The first Tad album is brilliant though. Nipple Belt, Sex God Missy, Behemoth, TUNA CAR!! To me personally there were only really 3 'grunge' records and 3 grunge bands! They are Tad 'Gods Balls', Nirvana 'Bleach' and Mudhoney 'Superfuzz Bigmuff'. Those are the holy trinity of GRUNGE. All 3 bands made equally as significant records, but grunge to me is 1989. It kinda ends with that gig in my mind. I realise this makes no sense:) This is purely a personal view borne out of hindsight! I mean the whole scene obviously BLEW UP and went on to be this HUGE thing, but you know what I mean yeah? Anyway, Tad slayed that night. The set culminated in another gear trash. Tad himself totalling his beautiful white vintage Fender Jazzmaster. They were SO heavy. Mudhoney were great, but if anything a bit of a disappointment after Nirvana and Tad. We'd been rocked to pieces!! I do remember Tad stage diving into the crowd during Mudhoneys set! The crowd PARTED and he must have hit the ground, or some folks really hard!! We drove home through the worst fog I have ever had the misfortune to be in. You could barely see the front of the car!! It was insane! I have never felt to relieved to get home..... What a night! Wish I'd bought a t shirt..... But Tad!! He/they were so great! I don't think they ever really bettered Gods Balls. Eight Way Santa and Salt Lick are good but...... That original line up of Tad, Steve on drums, Kurt on bass and Gary on guitar. So amazing! It really is primal rock therapy!! Hog Molly are ok, but, hey how about a Tad reformation!!

Ha ha ha. Aye you wouldn't believe how good those gigs were! The first time I saw Mudhoney in May 1989. Supported by Soundgarden. Incredible..... I could reminisce about that one 'till the cows come home. That's why I love this forum! No one else I know is interested in this stuff! However my wife would like it known that she was ALSO at the Tad, Mudhoney, Nirvana Astoria show in 1989. I didn't know her then though! My wife is VERY cool!
I saw Sonic Youth on the Goo tour (I was a bit late getting to see them - never saw the Daydream Nation shows:( and of course at Reading 1991 (the year punk broke:) with Dinosaur, Babes In Toyland. Oh and Nirvana. That was an incredible performance! I'm convinced I'm in that film as well. There's one shot where I am almost 99% convinced he was filming behind me........least it looks a bit like the back of my head!! Sonic Youth were great on the Dirty tour. I saw them supported by Pavement in London. GREAT SHOW! But you know they were great 3 years ago on the Murray Street tour and still great last year!!!
But re: ad. I think I've written this before but I'm convinced there IS a market (ok it may be small) for Sub Pop grunge era re-issues. It's not that easy to pick up the early Tad releases. Remastered, extra tracks. I'd buy it!! I have 3 x copies of Gods Ball. CD, Glitterhouse LP version and Sub Pop gatefold with poster version which is a bit battered. I picked up on Ebay a copy of Daisy the first Tad 7" (for about £30 - not a bad price!). That's one of my pride and joys!
