Good old Hanoi Jane!! Raunchands - you are 100% correct. Oneida are a FANTASTIC band. My band ( www.heycolossus.com/ sorry for the plug again:) were lucky enough to support them last year on one of their Secret Wars (last album - go buy it now!) live shows. They are incredible live. Really looking forward to seeing them again and getting hold of their new album. For a 3 piece they make a HUGE NOISE!!! Yup anyone into Mudhoney will dig Oneida!!

that's interesting because when i saw them last year i thought they weren't that great. granted, i had impossible expectations ("this night is gonna change my life!"), but i remember being especially disappointed by the guitar, which sounded very thin and weak (for oneida standards, anyway).
this year they were much louder and much better. what a great show. still, sometimes i think they could use that little extra kick here and there. not another guitar, but more audio effects, a la dikmik.
the new album (the wedding) is VERY different from their previous stuff. i'm listening to it right now. it almost remind me of the flaming lips going "pop" on yoshimi. there's also a couple of trippy raga moments, but yeah, most of the ear splitting distorted guitars are nowhere to be found.
folks--don't leave smallstone and me raving at each other about this band that we both know very well already. go buy one of their records or at least try some mp3's! if you can find the one for the song called "each one teach one" listen to it! it's a good introduction to their sound.

I'm v keen to hear the Wedding, I've heard it goes off on a bit of a tangent, which sounds exciting. I guess the gig I saw them at - it was all tied up with supporting them and stuff. The excitement of the night and all - still they did rock and the drummer is incredible...... They used to be a 4 piece, Hanoi Jane now doubles up on bass and guitar. I kinda like that. I think it makes for some interesting dynamics and frees up the keyboard dude to freak with it a bit.
I very nearly went to see Onieda play last Monday night in Paris. Me and my wife were in town for a few days on a break and also to see the mighty Arcade Fire play in Montmartre ( they were INCREDIBLE - y'all go buy their album NOW!!). We met up with a guy from Oniedas label Rough Trade I know who nicely sorted us for ghuest list places for the night. Unbeknownst to Onieda were playing in Paris the same night, but we were too pooped to do two gigs in one night in a strange city..... getting too old:(
Gonna try and catch them in London next week. You going RaunchHands? Are you London based? Anyone on this board going to see 'em?

Ok - as a matter of fact my band Hey Colossus got offered the 1st support for the London Oneida show next week on the 2nd June at 99 Feet East down Brick Lane so if anyone is London based come and laugh at our pitiful attempts to make a huge racket:) We're on at 8.30pm We sound like Black Sabbath jamming with Tago Mago era Can. Onieda as we are discussing here (well a few of us are) are an EXCELLENT band. ta

OK! Another opportunity to play with the masters Oneida. Frankly I think as a band we'd travel anywhere in the UK to do it, but luckily Brick Lane is kinda easy to get to.....usually. Tower Bridge was up so traffic was at a standstill in South East London. We very nearly didn't soundcheck. An out of the ordinary 93 Feet East experience to tell the truth. Huge fashion school parties going on everywhere down Brick Lane. Whole area had a carnival like atmosphere. Half the club given over to a Hip Hop styleee party. Harvey from Top Of The Pops was spotted as was Pop Idol reject and Eurovision no hoper Javine. Queues for the toilet cubicles were ridiculous. What is it about cocaine people like so much? It's really expensive. You have to squeeze into flooded toilet cubicles with 5 other people to take the stuff. It makes you an aggressive twat and you can catch hepatitis. Sounds like no fun at all to me!! Anyway. We played a 3 song (Take It, Europa, Noise Of Carpet) set that lasted 14 minutes. Would like to have played more. 2nd band were nice folks, 2 drummers, expensive guitars, sounded like Mogwai. Played for hours! The Oneida folks found the whole deal pretty amusing, but they seemed pretty psyched to be playing though. Acid Mothers Temple were playing around the corner. Oneida and them would have been an interesting/better line up!! They rocked an INCREDIBLE set though. Started with a 10 minute version of 'Each One Teach One'. Played stuff off os Secret Wars and lots off of the new CD The Wedding. Hanoi Jane skips between a funky old Les Paul Studio and a HUGE Gibson Thunderbird bass. All this goes through 2 x Ampeg Cabs powered by a mad old Traynor amp. Bobby Matador still hammers his keyboard like he hates it. He had a row of Electro Harmonix pedals he was stomping on. Kid Millions he akes me want to sell my kit and become a potter or something. If I was only half as good.... They also played $50 dollar tea, cpt bo, and caesars column. They are GREAT blokes. They were actually pleased to see us (as a band) as we had played with them before as I said. Truly they are Gods amongst men. Kid Millions, Bobby Matador and Hanoi Jane we salute you!

Nah don't think they did that:( I really really really need to get a copy of Each One Teach One. They played it for like 10+ minutes - 1st track. Bobby Matador is crazy. Kid Millions was rocking this insane moustache. When he drums and sings (wearing that headpiece mic thang) - just leaves me speachless! Didn't get the new was - got the CD - but may blag the wax from chums at Rough Trade:)
