No offence to anyone from holland,but i dont really see the big deal.All my friends have been there and want to go every year but i ask myself why? I mean dont get me wrong i know its a wonderful place and always has some kool bands playing around and all,but apart from that widow shopping for ladies? smoking drugs whith no hassle? no offence to anyone who wants to go there for that,but i'd rather the thrill of the cops turning up while im making a joint and its more fun that way i find,and im no sex god but i dont need to pay for my women.And that post aint aimed at anyone in peticilar i just had to get it off my chest.  |

Well, as I live close to Amsterdam for all my life I have a different point of view than you. The main reason I'd like to live in Amsterdam has nothing to do with drugs or sex. I can get both elsewhere too. Being thrilled for the cops while smoking pot? Sorry, but I've never experienced that in my whole life so I wouldn't know. Just to make sure: soft drugs is being tolerated everwhere in the Netherlands, not just Amsterdam. You probably know that already but some don't. Wasn't it Eddie Vedder who thought Copenhagen was the capital of Amsterdam? Anyway, my main reason would be the atmosphere. Honest. Amsterdam is most likely the most tolerant city in Holland, maybe Europe as well, or even the world. You can act or wear or just do whatever you want without being looked after. And I also could go to work and school by bike or tram. And of course, a coffeeshop just around the corner would be nice  |

Yeah man i totaly see what you'r saying,but there are alot of assholes here who only go for the sex and smoking drugs which i find a bit strange but also in a way a bit unfair as i know most of my friends have been there more than once and told me so many good stories about it,and all the sights coffee shops and diffrent people they met and all.All i was trying to say really was i just dont understand anyone who wants to go there for a cheap shag and a smoke.

I Honeymooned in Amsterdam 5 years ago. We stayed on a houseboat near the old Olympic Stadium. Lovely purpose built place, really well appointed. We had bikes laid on to tour the city on. We went to the Van Gogh Museum, the Zoo, on wee canal trips, wandered around a lot. Found a nice bar we liked (not a 'smokers' place - just what I think is called a 'brown bar') where every early evening we'd have a beer or two. Caught a show in a small bar that a friends band were doing. Went to a funny Nu Metal club and laughed at the folks dancing to the Deftones and the Limpy Biscuits.
I loved the place. We didn't sit in a café smoking dope once! We did buy 2 pre rolled joints for a laugh but the 1st one made us both feel ill so we threw the other one away!!
I loved the place. No hassle. Clean streets. Nice folks. The 'red light' district is pretty horrible, but you know, it's pretty small and easy to avoid. I'm no expert on the place, but I have very fond memories of it:) Love to go back sometime.
