I've just got round to listening to the entire of this album in full after buying it a while ago on eBay, damn hard to get hold of at a reasonable price and I do love my reasonable prices lol. I never really thought much of it, but after listening to it again just now I'm really loving some of those tracks that were never really highlighted by appearances on Best Of's and Adverts and the like. Sure it's a bit more confined and mainstream sounding but, for example, Ghost is an amazing little song with a great chorus. It's a shame they made no vids for any of the songs off THT, although this is Reprise, the label that bums My Chemical Romance At least Mudhoney got to keep their name unlike Gruntruck did when Roadrunner screwed them over. Anyhow just wondering on other people's opinions, since it's not really spoken of much.

I really like this album, probably one of the best the guys did so far. Sure the sound is a pro (it was the album that they most spend on it) but the sound of the guitar they got there is amazing. And also they released some of their finest songs on there (Oblivion, Real Low Vibe, Beneath the Valley of the Underdog, This is The Life, Move with the Wind etc)

THT is possibly my favourite Mudhoney album... I've thought long and hard about this Setting aside SFBM (its an EP) this really turned my head BACK to Mudhoney in 1998 (Christ it's 10 years ago!). As a half way point in their career... jesus... time is flying. I like the production - Dickinson does a great job and the songs are REALLY strong. Poisoned Water, I Had to laugh, Real Low Vibe etc etc I saw them on this tour and they were possibly at their lowest ebb (Matt was v soon to depart and whilst the show at the Garage in London was GREAT he looked pretty bored by the whole thing...) commercially and critically at least in the UK (I'll dig out the scathing NME review). Musically they were on fire. I kinda think they could have easily called it a day after this release...had they not taken some time out, done Monkeywrench, toured South America, got Guy in... etc etc. In the 10 years since this has come out a LOT has happened. UK types should go out and buy Uncut magazine right now for a 3 page Superfuzz BigMuff review and interview with Dan, Mark and Jon P from Sub Pop. Anyway - yeah to record. Better than Piece Of Cake! This is their lost classic! It's tight but loose, spacey but precise and both punk and rock

Ya what? In Uncut? The only half-decent music magazine out there (aside from an odd edition or two of NME)?
*puts Uncut on shopping list as priority*

yeah, I recently have played "Ghost" about a million times in two weeks -- I also have always dug "A Thousand Forms of Mind." I know Mark has said it was one of his least favorites, but I think its an underdog of the bunch.

Damn it i read that post about Uncut earlier this week and forgot all about buying it. *writes UNCUT with biro on hand* !! I think the showcase for the production quality of THD is the instrumental 'i will fight no more forever'.... all the blended instruments and a really cool haunting harmonica near the end. A great tune. And you gotta love the secret track Mark should play piano/organ more - its honky-tonk-tastic!

Buy Uncut!! ha ha. Or I'll have to figure out how to insert the scan I have of it on here somehow! Its a pdf file of a scan. Does anyone want it? Send me your mail and I'll send it to you and maybe you - YES YOU! - can do it for me. Review of both SFBM ad TLO in new Mojo - the one with a craggy 50 yeas old Paul Weller on cover. Ok as for THT. Yup - production is great. It's probably the most 'produced' of all of MHs 8 studio albums. Dickinson went to work I think on this one. Some great guitar sounds and ampage. From interviews around this time they spent the front end on recording as they knew Warners weren't arsed about the band/album and wouldn't promote it/back it up with marketing etc. I think they could have come up with the best album of all time and Warners would have swept it under the carpet in 1998. 'Grunge' and old KC or whatever was still a wee bit fresh in everyones minds for anyone to take MH seriously at this point. Lucky they came to the UK at all on this tour. Happy days though!

I read somewhere that they normally took their advance to record (around a 100 grand) and spent about 10 of it actually recording, and living off the rest of it since it was the only money they would be paid. When it came time to do THT, Warners would only pay for actual recording costs, so they spent it all since they couldn't take any of it on the back end. And wow, what a record they made! THT is right up there with their best work. The guitar sounds may be the best they have recorded
