Steve Turner - first album
Very surprised i was -to find out that he actually went ahead to do solo stuff that is essentially quite different in overall style to mudhoney, M/wrench, and even the somewhat cock-rocky Green River
But the brilliant guitar riffs are still very much there
Back in 2003 - may, end of second semester, myself and 2 of my mates went to see him play in the small venue and a pub type place, called The Village, in inner city Dublin
We go the tickets at the last instant - but there was no need to worry - the attendance was a mere20-30 people, which was GREAT ofcourse
There were round tables positoned all the way from the back and the side-bar right to the very (quite low-height) stage
It was a very intimate and a close-up kinda gig
we'd no idea what to expect
There were two openers - both sucked, and just went unnoticed by most as well as ourselves, while getting drunk on beer
So i went for a whizz to WC, already quite tipsy - its located at he entrance to back stage, just as i went in someone came out of the backstage entrance - i look up and see - STEVE,,,
He just smiled and i froze, i wanted to say some thing but i just blurted out - when does the headliner start - he said oh i think any minute now, (or something like that)
wish i had a talk with the guy but he stood there looking at me, i said thanks and went into the mens room
Did't say shit about it to two of my mates
But kept thinking i should fucking talked to steve..
Anyway - after almost 2 housr of 2 mediocre and just boring support acts - Steve comes out all on his own and sits down , picks up a guitar, smiles and tells a few jokes and then - fucking hell - first song, i still remember it - 'searching for melody' (which is the debut album's name too) is absolutely entrancing, and sounded so much better than on the album...
Maybe the fact that it was me, 2 mates and some 20 old people sitting down sipping beer, and our table literally about 10 or so feet away from steve himself - i'm sure that made it even more 'impacting' but i still think the way he played that night could not come close (as in AY better0 to the way that the album is heard - which still nonethe;es is absolutely brilliant IMO
One of my friends, also a rabid mud fan - all the way through the show he did nothing but stare at steve playing while laughing hysterically, like a true lunatic...i think he was absolute;y overwhelmed though
What a show though - i've seen Mudhoney live twice (once in dublin, but 2 years before that in barcelona) and i still think steve's show was if not better than both mud shows then at least - just as good.
But good in its own way ofcourse, and obviously different, and a in a totally good way different that is
After the show - a few kids at the table closest to the stage got steve's autographs - us 3, thinking we were better than everyone, dodidn't bother with autographs (but in al honesty 0 -i do not care for autographs really)
me and my mate went over to shake Stvey's hand and finally i just said a few words - sopmething like - amazing show, man, and i'd love to see you back here again
My mate said - you come back here and you bring mudhoney with you
The 3rd chap was just sittibg at the table unwilling to even come over to talk to Stve - still don't understand why, but then he must have had his reasons
Anyways - one of the best shows i's ever attended
About 3 years later, steve (maybe howvever unlikely - heeded my mate's advice and came back to Dublin, and to the EXACT venue and he didn't come alon - he came with mudhoney)
The same venue with mudhoney playng was this time full to capacity - 300 or so people - no tables this timne - just a standing crowds and a bar still serving at the back
BRILLIANT show all the same
But anyhow - a few days later after Stve's solo gigh -i went to Tower records and got his first album
loved most of it - some of it i didn't quite understand
Ended up giving it to another friend who asked to borro wit - never git it back
Recently i was on amission to try and find it in all the stores - no luck
So finally i lucked out and got a zip-download of it of a site on the net
Some of the tracksare very good in my opinion
Album's called - "SerchingFor Melody"
