all good points. of course we'll always perfer matt because he was an original member, but as you said, guy does fit in well with their current style. matt would have too, but guy is a great bassist as well.
...& welcome to the board!

very true, but mudhoney always have been and will be punk and blues, even since the beginning. after all their first ever song was bluesy and punky, and fucking fuzzy!!!

ive actually always thought it was funny that they alude to being a punk act. because ive always considered their sound far too dynamic to be classified as such. with the exception of superfuzzbigmuf era.but something like mudride isnt 2 dimensional enough to be considered "punk" in my opinion. all the albums up until tommorow hit today had some songs that were structured like punk but the guitar tones have far to much depth and fidelity to be "punk" if you ask me. im playing devils advocate here though if i had time to write a detailed thesis it would be much less one sided.as i said there are songs on every album up until tommorow hit today that have obvious punk leanings.but if i didnt know that leaning was there to begin with and i picked up their last two abulms i wouldnt notice it at all. really what i think though is that mudhoney have a very unique sound. they are the only band with a song structure as basic as theirs to hold my attention and that is because they are flat out amazing. if someone asked me what kind of music they are i really wouldnt know what to tell them.my response would be a stammered........ "well ummm...they um are kinda blues influenced and ummm, punk influenced maybe theres some folk in there and some flat out rock uhhhh well i dont know they are just mudhoney" i suppose that is the bottom line they transcend genres they are just mudhoney one of the best acts to come out of the last three decades.

thanks in after thought i kinda got off topic though. i ll shoot for on topic you know i forget that living in the northwest i get see mudhoney a lot. some of the people here probably dont have that kind of opportunity.i think seeing a musician perform live gives you a better idea what kind of player they are. honestly i was very apprehensive about the new bass player.but after seeing him live several times that apprehension was done away with. if i saw guy maddison performing with a shitty ass band i would still think "that bassist is fucking awsome" guy maddison is a bassist among bassists. i was also apprehensive about horns on the new album but was blown away.i know better now than to ever doubt again. so what im saying is that i in fact prefer guy madison. but matt lukin will always be missed. (sorry for this somewhat needless post im quite sleep deprived but i dont want to delete it after putting effort in )

matt drank more than guy does (see the cover of hate the police) and then became a huge pot head and quit the band. mudhoneys music is built around its sloppiness, and therefore you really don't need to be good at bass to play in the band... and that is the beauty of it.... guy is probably technically better, but that doesn't count for shit in a band like mudhoney... it really doesn't matter, both know/knew how to have fun on stage which is what counts and makes them equal.... likewise for kramer and dukich (sic?)

i think you're going out on a limb a little there, but i do understand what yr saying about the sloppiness & that's something i really like about them: they're not overly concerned with perfection. however, they all are talented musicians, which does count, because if they weren't they wouldn't be capable of writing such great music. besides, everyone knows mudhoney is built around a firm base of solid fuzz with just a touch of sloppiness.
