i guess i could see what your saying to some degree. matt was certainly somewhat the mudhoney mascot.
but no matter what kind of persona they were trying to convey in the earlier years,they are a very very tight band steves leads are often improved live but still tight and matt was an extremely tight basist(that in my opinion was one of strong points as the mudhoney basist.).
i guess in short "sloppy" would be the last word i would use to describe mudhoney.

matt will ALWAYS be better, and the reason: he was the first bassist in mudhoney, and thats what it boils down to, guy is great and mudhoney are still blues and still punk but more importantly theyre the FUZZ masters!!!!

fucking hell damn it mudhoney ARE punk AND blues and always will be get it, stop being philosophical about it because they play music the greatest thing on the planet, and they are damn good at it!!!

see, th way i see it is that matt was better foe th band when they were more of your fucked up dirty grungy punky beer drinkin rock n rollers. u could tell that the band were changin on tomorrow hit today, n when matt left after that u kinda get th impression that he didnt like th direction that th band was goin. and also his actual playin style wasnt right for th sound they were goin for. get what i mean? well, thats jus what i think anyway

well i think matt would have still been great but he was fed up with touring, which is fair enough, and thats the reason mudhoney decided to split, and then reform with guy. all that aside im glad mudhoney are still rocking out!!!!
