Ok, so a guy on a local forum put up a thread wanting to start a band --> I'm looking to form a four- or five- piece, drums, bass, two, maybe three guitars, possibly keys, vocal(s). The ability to sing backing would be a definite plus for anyone interested. I'm going for something that brings together the following:
Soundgarden Pearl Jam AIC Dave Matthews Foo Fighters System of a Down Stone Temple Pilots Audioslave Tool Rage Against The Machine Gn'R Bush Radiohead NIN and many others in that kind of vein.
This will be my main project, I'll be looking at rehearsing three times a week and gigging asap. I won't initially be reprising any of my old material; Writing new stuff shouldn't be an issue.
Above all I want to have some FUN with this, making the best music possible, I have no interest in forming a band with some random guys that I won't hang out with outside of jam time.
There y'go. PM me if you wanna go for a beer and talk it over.
Sop I relied and finally got a post back saying I could have a try out. I thought that it'd be me and him jammin and seeing if we gel and whatnot but, alas it's not that way. He said "Come down and I'll watch you play.
So my question is
What the hell do I play? I had thought about playing Man in a box by A.I.C as a warm up but then what I can't stop and say "right thats your lot am I in"?

Play something rhythmically hard like "Wattershed" from the first Foos album.

How about 15 minutes of feedback, than ask him for some feedback.

who the hell is this guy? play whatever you'd like to play in a band... if he doesn't like you, you don't want to play with him anyway! and yes, scare the shit out of him with some noise / improv / feedback to see if he's got some guts and/or sense of humor. the list of influence is kinda lame though... looks like the typical "square" pseudo-alternative rocker to me.

Hear Hear!! Do you really want to play with a guy who list of influences include Dave Matthews and Bush!! Let alone the other turgid list of 90s also wheres.... I do like Soundgarden though Paint you face white and do a Sunn O))) cover...... until he turns your amp off.

LOVED IT. ;D ;D ;D
i wish i had the time & money to try out all the lame "looking for guitarist" things from my area i see at record stores & on the web, just for the sheer pleasure of seeing these losers' horrified faces.
it's interesting that you bring up sunnO))) though, i see more and more people from other musical sub genres movin towards getting disenchanted with whatever hardcore, emo or punk'n'roll they've been listening to until now and turning to more heavy/psych stuff as the real thing. it feels like we're on the verge of a big leap in popularity for this kind of stuff... that'd be fun to watch.

I have had it up to here - well the top of my head with anything that comes anywhere near the term 'EMO'. What the heck is it anyway? Load of whining imo. I just don't understand it. Never liked it anyway.... Hardcore? As Lou Barlow sang once 'true hardcore is hard to find'.....
I'm well into my Earth at the moment. Their last album is I think just astonishing..... Sun O))) I can take every now again... I have had my brief dalliance with your Isis's, High On Fires and Electric Wizards... I'm not saying I don't dig what they do but..... (I love it) recently I've been listening to a lot of the more folkier / psychedelic side of stuff like...current bits:
Devendra Banhart Espers Vetiver Six Organs Of Admittance the mighty Comets On Fire (everybody who's going to see Mudhoney in London and at ATP MUST see COF live!!)
and going back 30/40 years and listening to: John Fahey Bert Jansch DYLAN! Fred Neil Donovan etc etc
Maybe its age... nah it's just cos its GREAT!! I wish I'd gone to that recent London Earth/Sunn O))) show. I've never answered a musicians wanted ad... actually I did once and it was a nightmare!! I like to play with people I kinda know...
