i just found this interview with Steve Albini that was done in 1992 for MRR. www.dangpow.com/~landed/bigblack/mrrint.htmand I found this quote very funny MRR #112: What do you think of all the stuff coming out of Seattle right now? Steve Albini: I think there is a good band from up there, Tad. All the rest can jump in the water. A lot of it sounds like they want to be Van Halen to me. Nirvana wannabe Led Zeppelin, and Fluid wannabe Nirvana, and Mudhoney wannabe Van Halen. And I just don't see the point in a lot of that stuff. There's bands like Jane's Addiction everywhere, so why make a big deal out of being a slightly different version of the same thing? The thing I like about Tad is that he's a huge fat man. And that sort of prevents him from jumping around the stage like an idiot. Like D. Boon was. And as a result he doesn't make me embarrassed to see them. Like you go see Mudhoney or one of those bands and it's silly how great they think they are. It's almost offensive to me. And the thing is when Mudhoney started out they were a real cool, real fucked up band. Their first single, I think, is really great. And now it's sort of like a hard rock version of The Beatles. If you had a choice between being this totally great fucked up band or being this hard rock generic pop band, why be a generic pop band? Unless it was some sort of ego thing where you think "We can compete with Foreigner." Mudhoney = Van Halen ? hahha clean your ears Steve ;P

Ok, I'm gonna say this out loud. I can see what Albini means, I liked the sludgy Mudhoney better too. The last record is surpringly good, but.. I don't know, I can just understand what Albini really means.

Ok you are obviously entitled to your opinion - that goes without saying - but you need to put Albinis quote in it's proper context. It's from an interview he did in 1992. With Maximum Rock And Roll. This is 14 (long) years ago and relates to Mudhoney then - not now. So Albini is comparing the Mudhoney of 'Touch Me I'm Sick' and 'Superfuzz Bigmuff' to the Mudhoney of 'Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge' and 'Piece Of Cake'. Certainly not the Mudhoney of.... today Albini is having a go at the Mudhoney who have 'deserted' the 'underground' (Sub Pop etc) and signed to the corporate ogre - WEA. Shit like that kinda got certain peoples backs up back then.... Especially Albinis!! He was (is still...?) the undergrounds Chief of Ethics! Get me? Now don't get me wrong - if push came to shove I prefer the Mudhoney of 'SFBM' and 'Mudhoney' to 'EGBDF', 'POC' & 'MBTC'.... But I kinda put 'THT', 'SWBT' and 'UABS' up there with the early stuff..... Now this is kind of off topic (Iggy & The Stooges - er... they RULE!) but I saw Mudhoney on the 'POC' tour (Kilburn National - London 1993-4?) and it was the worst show I've seen them do. They were sloppy (not in a good way), stoned and taking the piss I thought. I didn't bother going to see them live again until they played the Garage in 1998. They were MUCH better. Not as good as they were at the Eclectic Ballroom, Astoria or Koko but better when other shit was getting in the way of them making REALLY good albums and playing great shows:) So to recap - Albini may have mellowed in his views on Mudhoney - or not. But BACK in the great alt rock/grunge wars of the EARLY '90s he'd decided that Mudhoney were sell outs.... Obviously not true.

Yes I am being 'diplomatic' on my feelings for him. I think he views it like this: When he 'records' a band he is working for the band not the label. Usually a band or at worst an A&R man contacts him to hire him to work. When he does work for the majors he takes them for as much as he can financially. I happen to be quite partial to a bit of Big Black and Shellac. R***man albums ok too. Seen Shellac live several times and always enjoyed 'em. Seems like he could be a bit of a cock at times though. There I've said it
