I don't think much of Grohls music these days - at a stretch I could deal with like one CD made up of all his FF tunes - but hats off to the guy! Reading Festival though.... you've been right Brandnewface? I first went in 1987 for a day. I was 15. Blew my mind. I got really ill though.... wasn't pretty Can't even remember who I saw! This is back in the day when Friday was 'indie' day. Rest of the weekend was REALLY bad metal and classic rock. I think I saw the Mission actually...
1988 I went for the weekend and camped for 4 days. Me and a mate. On the 'indie' Friday we saw The Seers, The Wonderstuff and headlining the Ramones followed by Iggy Pop! It. Was. Incredible!! Me and my mate watched every band - from Japanese Glam Metal band Loudness to Squeeze, Bonnie Tyler (who got bottled off) and frickin Meat Loaf!!! He had his nose broken by a bottle! It was so bad. The line up, atmosphere, everything. People just weren't being catered for at all. You could feel it.
In 1989 the organisers/bookers of the festival changed and it went mental! The line up was amazing. EVERYONE I knew went. About 30 / 40 people from my home town camped together. There seemed to be double the amount of people there from the year before! The headliners were the Pogues, New Order and The Mission. But I remember Butthole Surfers.... jesus it was carnage. Never seen anything like it before. The mosh pit.... Saw Loop, World Dom. Swans!!!! Spacemen 3, My Bloody Valentine. LOADs of bands. LEGENDARY.
Only went for a day (just to see Mudhoney and Nick Cave) in 1990. It was good though. This is back when you could go without a tickets and buy one. ON THE DAY. Mudhoney rocked it. I think there was some mud throwing and Mr Arm got a bit pissed off... I know I would have been too...Nick Cave was amazing.
Anyway - my point - do I have a point? - yes 1991!! Dave Grohl. That line up. That Friday. Jesus christ. Babes In Toyland - they rocked SO HARD. Nirvana. Dinosaur. Sonic Youth. Iggy Pop. (some other bands played too..). There were so many people freaking out that day. Nirvana playing 'Teen Spirit' in the UK for the 1st time. People hearing it for the 1st time!! Folks I were with (right down the front) were like 'what the fuck was that song!!!'. Grohl was hyperventilating on stage it seemed. Ah sweet memories.
Sorry if this sounds like old man reminiscing
