this has just been published in the UK - a Q magazine special on 'Grunge' - ack the dreaded G word!! But... despite having features on Alice In Chains etc etc it's really pretty damn good. For those of you who don't know, Q is a pretty straight laced major label stylee music mag, published by Emap who also do vastly superior mag Mojo. In what looks like a piece originally intended for Mojo Keith Cameron has written a really really amazing Mudhoney piece. Shame it wasn't in Mojo as more people would read it, but there you go.
Again for those of you who don't know your grunge history Keith Cameron was one of the 1st journalists to ever write about Sub Pop/Mudhone/Nirvana etc etc , not just in the UK but pretty much the world (out side of Seattle I guess).
Cameron was at a LOT of the early shows - again both in the UK and US whilst he wrote for orginally Sounds then the NME. He knows the bands (he wrote a piece on Nirvana for the NME back in the day which rightly or wrongly lifted the lid on the whole 'Nirvana-drugs-they're really fucking' up issue - for which he was pretty much publicly cut off from the band - another story....). But the Mudhoney piece is great. Lots of first hand interviews with Steve , Mark and Dan (no Matt sadly) and Jon Poneman from Sub Pop.
So anyways I don't wanna spoil yer fun by relaying all thats in the piece - but folks outside UK have fun trying to track this down! But I suggest anyone with an interest in Mudhoney trys to get a copy. It's a great read, better than the This Band Could Be Your Life chapter on Mudhoney. The bands insight into the whole Nirvana success issue is dipped into alongside the Pearl Jam success 'feud' style thang. WELL WORTH READING - all you Nirvana worshippers will be kinda shocked I think.... It's really balanced and has some total 'Wow I didn't know that moments'.
I think people are already selling this on Ebay. Seems anything with Kurt C's face still sells out pretty quick!!
Anyone else read it - got a copy? What do folks think if they have?
Oh and the photo's are beautiful!! Some great new Charles Peterson shots!!
