mark doing heroin... old story, he spoke about that in an interview for Thrasher magazine in 2001. i was quite shocked to hear that. what is REALLY amazing though is that he was able to quit it pretty much by himself. after he od'd he apparently said to himself, "i'm done with this shit" and, well, he never looked back--and if you know how strong heroin's grip is, you've got to admit that it's no small thing. and yes, step number one if you want to save yourself from heroin is to stop hanging out with your junkie friends. too bad poot kurt was too insecure / depressed / fucked up to get rid of courtney.

This is from an interview circa Piece Of Cak time - so 1992/3 (in Kerrang - done by some guy called Chris Watts...) :
'It's been widely reported that Kurt Cobain has turned to heroin. You yourself have a reputation. True or false?' Mark Arm "I won't answer that. It's a private matter. Thats like asking me if I'm straight or gay. To be honest, it's no ones business'.
He the goes on to say his favourite ROCK AND ROLL casualty is Peter Tork from the Monkees.

But more importantly: how can you do a grunge special without featuring the eight tons of fun that was TAD? In a word, shoddy. Going by what I've read, Mark and Steve were first introduced to each other by a confused mutual aquaintance who thought they would get along because they were both straight edge. In actual fact, neither of them were straight edge (in fact I think both were pretty wasted when they were introduced) - AND THE REST IS HISTORY! Check Our Band Could Be Your Life for exact recollections... I think the song that sums up their early attitude to partying is the mighty Running Loaded: "No one remembers, how to play!" See also their first ever released song, the splendiferously out fo tune and sloppy 24: "I've been drunk for 24 years/ If I had a dime for every time / someone's always trying to change me / I'd be drunk for 24 more..."
